The sculptor Sergio Andrade was born on the first of February in the year 1955 in Santiago, Chile. His parents were both artists, his mother a dressmaker and his father a furniture maker. Sergio grew up among rolls of material and pieces of wood and even in his childhood he felt the need to express himself through his hands, using materials like leather and wood. At the age of 8 he made his first leather hand bag and by 12 he had set up a little workshop in the attic of the house. From here he began to sell his work.
Before he reach adulthood he traveled in Argentina where he had the privilege of getting to know master craftsmen dedicated to leather work. This and other experiences marked out his new understanding.
In spite of his youth and his travels in South America, Sergio had tremendous desire to go to the old continent. With the proceeds of his work, at the age of 21 he made the journey to Europe, basing himself in the city of Barcelona. In the following five years he did worked various jobs in order to survive, activities as diverse as picking fruit and driving trucks.
In Europe he was attracted by the ancient architecture and sculpture that used base materials like wrought iron, wood and stone. These encounters awoke familiar emotions and sensations in the deepest part of his soul, as if he were re-visiting previous life experiences. Nonetheless after a few years he felt an uncontrollable urge to return to Chile. Once back in Chile, he began his artistic life in earnest, and not only began his career as an artist, but also met his wife and companion who for more than 30 years has been unconditionally by his side in the course of his professional and family life.
In his search for perfection Sergio has succeded in developing a style which is his own and is widely recognizable among Chilean artist. He uses a wide range of materials, among which recycling plays an important part. In this way he helps conservation and the environment.
Architecture, sculpture, art and other works which define the essence of a true artist are translated into a style which lives in harmony with the natural environment.
The creative works of men should and can live in harmony in our planet and this is something which Taller Pangal shows in each and every one of his works, regardless of its size.
